The historic city of Tarpon Springs has the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any location in the United States. This Greek heritage is readily apparent in the culture of the city, from the famous Sponge Docks to the Greek restaurants, markets, bakeries and live entertainment in the area. Tarpon Springs has a fine mix of historical homes and newer residences that blend well with this culture.
Although the sponges that the city is famous for have declined since its heyday, there is still a small fleet of sponge boats that call the Sponge Docks home. Many of the rest of the boats have been converted to fishing and shrimp boats. Tarpon Springs also hosts the Greek Orthodox Church Celebration of Epiphany on January 6th each year, a celebration that includes youths diving for a cross and the blessing of the waters and the boats.
